e-Learning popularity soars with budget cuts: survey
Almost double the number of Australian businesses have turned to e-Learning for their staff training needs over the last five years as the economic downturn forces managers to do more with less.
The latest e-Learning Confidence Barometer released today from Australia’s leading online training provider TheCyberInstitute revealed 79 per cent of companies now use some form of
e-Learning compared with 44 per cent in 2003.
Despite the impact of the economic downturn, 31 per cent of businesses surveyed increased their annual learning and development budgets over the past twelve months.
“This result confirms the trend we identified five years ago when most organisations surveyed (73 per cent) indicated they would increase their investment in e-Learning over the next two years,” Managing Director of TheCyberInstitute Ms Carolyn Barker AM said.
“The survey showed most businesses (63 per cent) access their e-Learning programs through web-based learning management systems and that this learning is delivered by a third party. We are seeing more companies make this decision because of the expense associated with in-house platforms.”
Sixty five businesses, including Australian and international publicly listed and major private companies, were surveyed for TheCyberInstitute e-Learning Confidence Barometer. The Barometer monitors eLearning trends in business.
The results show eLearning is being used by businesses today for a broad range of training purposes.
“Using eLearning for compliance training remains popular in the workplace, with 55 per cent of businesses surveyed currently using online programs for their compliance requirements. This is primarily because results from compliance courses can be tracked. Many businesses are also using eLearning programs for induction purposes (47 per cent) and to improve their IT skills (35 per cent).
“ELearning is now mainstream. The majority of businesses (40 per cent) expect their use of eLearning to increase over the next twelve months as they better understand that this learning medium is now an effective methodology in corporate Australia.
“Interestingly, more than half the companies surveyed (51 per cent) don’t currently have a learning management system in place. This may suggest an adoption of the ‘software-as-a-service’ (SaaS) trend instead of providers.
“More businesses are realising this helps free up the resources previously invested in acquiring, updating and maintaining hardware and software that drives learning management systems.
“We are also working with a greater number of organisations whose teams are separated by distance. They choose eLearning to reduce what is becoming known as “training miles”.
The 35 per cent of businesses who don’t currently use eLearning cited a lack of time and training resources as the key reason behind their decision.
TheCyberInstitute will now conduct the eLearning Confidence Barometer annually.
