Remote depot staff eLearning

The client

A leading provider of road transport solutions for moving freight around Australia.

The challenges

The client needed a consistent standard of training for a vast number of depots spread across remote areas of Australia. They needed to maintain the quality of existing training while eliminating the need for face-to-face explanation, given the geographic isolation of many staff.

The goals

The project aimed to develop a training program that was:

  • delivered online
  • self-paced and available on company computers at any time of the day
  • linked to company performance standards
  • user-friendly and engaging
  • simple to use and appropriate for different literacy levels and software skills.

The solution

Our client provided the content and we developed that content into a storyboard. We created an avatar to explain the information (replicating face-to-face training) and designed interactive activities to keep staff engaged.

The courses were tested for usability and delivered to remote depot locations, running independently on the company’s learning management system.

The eLearning solution improved staff communication and management skills, and allowed participants to undertake training that led to Certificate III qualifications in transport and logistics.

The learning management system used to deliver the training could track results, so managers and supervisors could assess staff readiness for new roles.

The results

With this solution, TCI Won 2009 LearnX awards for:

  • Best Blended Learning Solution
  • Best Instructional Designer
  • Best Training Team.

The client reported that:

  • The new training program increased the quality and consistency of learning outcomes across all depots, from the outer corners of Queensland to the Northern Territory.
  • The use of avatars and the interactive activities proved a huge success for employees who had struggled to retain information from classroom-style, content-heavy training.
  • The simple and interactive delivery helped users who hadn’t trained for some time, and increased the safety and efficiency of staff in performing their duties.
  • The company was better able to assess staff readiness for promotions and development opportunities.

The client continues to use the courseware to ensure that users are skilled and trained for Certificate III qualifications in transport and logistics. This helps the company maintains a competitive edge and remain a leader in freight handling and delivery across Australia.  And the client has commissioned several new projects with TCI!
